For those unfamiliar with NaNoWriMo, November is National Novel Writing Month. In short, the challenge is to write a 50,ooo word novel in one month. I’m telling you this because I’ve decided to give it a go. I won’t bore you with the details of how I came upon this challenge, and I’ll keep the identity private of the kind author (jerk) who encouraged me to do it. But I will tell you exactly how I intend to participate. And you, kind reader, are crucial to my success. (FYI…the aforementioned author is not a jerk.)
Here is what I intend to do. I’m going to come up with a concept and a title sometime in the next few hours. I’m going to write everyday and publish what I’ve written each day in the NaNoWriMo section of this blog. It will be raw, unedited, and free form. This is not a place to witness the beauty and art of a polished writer unfold in front of your eyes. Nor are you going to see how a good outline, formula, or five step process can unlock the secret of fast writing. This is a place to watch some dude with a passion for writing stumble and fall, be vulnerable, bash through writers block, and hopefully have a few moments of inspired writing and beautifully written prose. Let’s add have some fun to that list as well. I do hope this ends up being fun.
Here’s what I need from y’all. I need you to keep me honest. Checking out my progress from time to time and the occasional comment will go a long way to keeping me writing everyday. If you’re really following along feel free to express what storylines you hope I develop more and any characters you love or hate. No matter how you choose to help out, thanks so much!
I think I’ve decided to write about a young girl in Namibia being visited by a demon in the night and how an attempt to end her own life unlocked a power within her. She vanishes for years until a strange being, in her eyes, requires assistance only she can provide. An intense curiosity and overpowering emotions cause her to jeopardize her own safety and her fate and that of the one she saved become intertwined.
That’s all I have so far…now I guess I’ll start writing.
